I have been fortunate to have lived in the Snowdonia National Park for many years and more recently in Norfolk, near its wild north coastline.  My creative inspiration has come from the relationship between the three most natural elements to be found in both areas - water, land and ever changing light. I have tried to capture them, not by true representation, but in an abstract contemporary style, which best shows the emotions and recollections deep within me of how I see these unique areas. Some paintings represent close detail or 'elements', whilst others a wider sense of landscape, but all, I hope, challenge the viewer to put their own interpretation on each painting, making it personal to the individual whilst making them more aware of their surroundings.

Everyone witnesses the combination of these three elements at some time, but it is only when you concentrate on a small area that you start to notice the intense colours, patterns and textures that form when those three elements meet at a special 'moment' in time. That 'moment' may only last a second or two. Some of these 'moments' may be filled with motion and exhilaration, others very calming. It is those 'moments' I wanted to capture.

| my technique

Each painting starts with an application of textures applied in numerous layers using various acrylic pastes ( Golden acrylics ) to form a semi-sculptural base.  Colour is then built up using many layers of transparent pigment ( Golden / Liquitex acrylics) which gives depth and luminosity. In addition neat or mixed interference medium ( Golden / Liquitex acrylics) is often used so that colours change subtly, or flashes of colour appear and then recede, when viewed from different angles, simulating reflections or light on wet surfaces. Some colours are also 'saturated' to emphasise those that do actually exist but are missed when casually observed. Various clear acrylic gels ( Golden acrylics) are also employed. These may be poured, splashed, textured, tinted or inter-layered with pigment which again reflects and refracts light from different angles to enhance the illusion of 'being there' at that special moment in time when land, water and ever changing light come together to create a stunning spectacle within the landscape.

Each painting has to be built up over a solid base to give the required stability for the many layering techniques.  This together with the textured uneven surface and depth of glazes turns each painting into more of a solid 'living wall sculpture', as they replicate the ever changing light and colours found within the landscape when they are viewed from different directions and in various light sources. Each painting comes complete with brass strap hangers and all are intended to be hung frameless as they appear on this web site.
