myself

I have been fortunate to have lived in the Snowdonia National Park for many years working as a graphic designer whilst also establishing my style as a self taught artist. I have now relocated to North Norfolk near its wild north coastline to paint full time. I have tried to capture the relationship between natural elements found in both areas - water, land and ever changing light. This I have done in a personal abstract way, showing emotions and recollections within me of how I see these unique areas, rather than just producing a ‘photographic’ image. Some paintings represent close detail or ‘elements’ whilst others a wider sense of landscape. All, I hope, challenge the viewer to put their own interpretation on each painting, making it personal to the individual whilst making them more aware of their surroundings.

technique

Each painting has to be built up over a solid base to give the required stability for the layering techniques described below. This together with the resulting depth of glazes and textured surfaces turns each painting into what have often been described as 'living wall sculptures'. Numerous layers of acrylic pastes in various forms are applied to first produce a semi-sculptural base. Working from a black background, highlights are introduced, together with the use of interference medium and metallics. This helps to make the paintings change in colour and hue when viewed from different angles, simulating the changes of light one would observe when passing through an actual landscape. Colour is introduced using many layers of transparent pigment which helps give depth and luminosity. Various types of clear acrylic gels are also employed. These may be poured, splashed, textured, tinted or inter-layered with further pigment, which again helps to reflect and refract light from different angles, to enhance the illusion of ‘moving through the landscape’ whilst viewing each painting.

commissions

I do undertake commissions. If you are looking for larger paintings than my usual 3 sizes I can produce diptychs (set of 2) or triptychs (set of three) in any combination of those 3 sizes which when hung together will form one painting. Please contact me for further information or free quote

buying

The easiest and safest way to buy one of my paintings from this site is to visit my studio which is open all year round by appointment (see studio) where you will be able to view available paintings and those in progress in quiet comfortable surroundings with no obligation to purchase. Please note I cannot accept cards at present and can only take cash or cheque.
However, monthly interest free payments can be arranged ( similar to the - affordable art scheme ), the painting being ready for collection on final payment.

Alternatively I can offer a viewing service to your door within approximately 150 miles of my studio in North Norfolk.
How this works: first contact me by email to check availability of those paintings you are interested in and let me know the address and post code at which you wish to view together with convenient dates. A delivery charge will then be quoted together with confirmation of a viewing date and approximate time of arrival. If after viewing you decide to purchase a painting(s) the delivery charge will be deducted from the sale. If you decide not to purchase the delivery charge will be non returnable.
